New Guide for Disability Support Workers says “Stay off your phone!”
17/04/2024
Advocacy WA, collaborating with VALiD in Victoria, has released a new video on what people with disability expect from their support workers when out in the community. Giving workers the participant’s view of their performance, the 15-minute video, ‘Stay Off your Phone!’, shows that pre-occupation with their mobiles is just one of the habits that workers can fall into that prevents the people they support from engaging fully with the outside world.
Growing from ideas in a Peer Action meeting in Melbourne, the video has been made by people with disability drawing from their experiences. They talk about the kinds of support they believe would help their communication and contribution in community situations.
For disability support workers, the video gives a sobering insight into what their practice might look like from the other side, as well as giving tips for improvement.
There is also an accompanying pdf guide. Both are freely available on Advocacy WA’s website.
Advocacy WA encourages support workers to view the video and speak to the person they are supporting about their expectations.
