ACT COVID-19 Update: Management Declaration Framework to end

NDS Covid-19 News Update

What you need to know

  • The ACT Government’s COVID-19 Management Declaration Framework will end on 28 February.
  • The remaining public health direction under the Declaration – to report a positive RAT result to ACT Health – will also end.
  • At the end of January, the mandate to wear masks in high-risk settings, including disability settings, was removed.
  • Although there are no mandatory directions, ACT providers should plan for COVID-19 and flu outbreaks in winter.

The ACT Government has announced that the territory’s COVID-19 Management Declaration Framework will end on 28 February with the removal of the final public health direction that requires people who test positive to a RAT to notify ACT Health.

The Garran Surge Centre will close permanently on 28 February. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the centre conducted more than 240,000 tests.

From 1 March, concession card holders who are recommended for PCR testing by their GP or health professional can be tested for free at a participating collection centre without a referral form. Those without a concession card will need a referral form from their GP.

Canberrans will still be able to get free RATs from ACT libraries and Access Canberra service centres. Full details are on the ACT Health website.

Earlier this month, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) updated their advice on COVID vaccination boosters in 2023. Although there are no mandatory directions, there are groups for whom the booster dose is recommended and others for whom the booster should be considered.

The Communicable Disease Network has also updated their guidelines on the control and management of outbreaks of Acute Respiratory Infection in disability residential services. The guidelines will help providers plan, prepare, detect and manage acute respiratory infection cases.

While we are all hoping for a mild flu season with no major COVID waves, now is the time to prepare. The NDS COVID-19 Hub  contains resources, information and advice collected from Australian governments, agencies and our member organisations. Make sure your policies and procedures are up to date and communicated with staff, participants and their families.

The NDS COVID-19 Prevention, Vaccines and Outbreak Management Network still meets regularly to discuss the complexities facing providers. If you would like to join the network and share insights with sector colleagues, please visit our events page for details
