Further information

For jobseekers with disability who want a different way to present themselves in the mainstream job market, NDS has produced a free, step-by-step guide on making a video resumé.

Lasting around two or three minutes and downloadable from YouTube, a video resumé presents a candidate’s skills and attributes in a direct, personal way, capturing what they have to offer an employer better than any closely typed list of achievements.

For people with a disability, a short video resumé allows them to control first impressions, promote their skills and capabilities and put their best foot forward.

For disability employment providers, it’s another tool to place their clients in front of employers or make the transition to open employment.

For employers looking to employ a more diverse workforce, a prospective worker presenting themselves through a video resumé gives them a better insight into the candidate and higher confidence in their skills and abilities.

It doesn’t matter if the jobseeker has never made a video before or has negligible tech skills. The “Make Your Own V-Resumé” website has everything they need, with simple, clear instructions, workbooks, editing software and short video tutorials that take them through the process. With a phone, a basic laptop and our support materials, anyone can write, film, edit and post a presentation.

It comes with examples of video resumes made by people with disability who had never made a video before.

The website assumes that the jobseeker will work with a support person, a V-Partner, who will help them through the process. The V-partner could be a trusted friend, family member or their employment consultant.

Both the jobseeker and their V-partner can work through a set of guiding questions in the workbooks to narrow the focus of the presentation and highlight the core attributes of the jobseeker. The partner can also lend support and encouragement during the filming and editing stages.

At the end of the process, the jobseeker will have a video showcasing their personality, interests, skills and capabilities that prospective employers can link to and a clearer idea of what they can bring to the open employment market.

NDS developed the Make Your Own V-Resumé website with funds from Grants SA.
