What you need to know
- Cervical cancer screening rates are lower among people with disability.
- Disability support workers can support the people they work with to access screening and take prevention measures.
- For disability service providers to learn more, NDS has produced a podcast on cervical cancer screening and prevention.
The rates of screening for cervical cancer are lower among people with disability than the general population. In response, NDS has created a podcast to increase disability service providers' knowledge and increase cervical screening uptake.
In the podcast, NDS’s Lou Zamanillo talks with Judy Slape and Ayesha Ghosh from Cancer Council Victoria to learn more about cervical cancer screening and prevention.
We are also joined by Nadia Garcia, Director of Disability Health at Yooralla, who shares her experiences in supporting people with disability to receive cervical cancer screening. She covers some of the common misconceptions that may get in the way of providing proper support. She also discusses the other barriers faced by people with a disability, such as clinic accessibility, physical limitations, competing health needs and informed consent. Becoming aware of these barriers is the first step in delivering appropriate support.
This podcast was produced with the support of the Victorian Department of Health and can be listened to or downloaded from podbean.
